Tinnitus Causes And Medications That Cause Tinnitus
Tinnitus is a wretched condition and tinnitus causes the sufferer varying degrees of discomfort. The condition is often rated clinically on a simple scale from “slight” to “catastrophic” according to the practical difficulties it imposes, such as interference with sleep, quiet activities, and normal daily activities.
As a former suffer I spent a lot of time researching the tinnitus causes for the condition, so I can now write this article from bitter experience – my suffering resulted from the medications that cause tinnitus.
I should explain the tinnitus causes are varied and it is not just the medications that cause tinnitus: ear infections, foreign objects or wax in the ear, nose allergies that prevent (or induce) fluid drain and cause wax build-up. However, the most common cause for tinnitus is noise-induced hearing loss.
Tinnitus can also be caused by natural hearing impairment (as in aging), as a side effect of some medications, and as a side effect of genetic (congenital) hearing loss.
I have listed below the known medications that cause tinnitus, in certain cases:
ototoxic medications
analgesics:
- aspirin
- nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
antibiotics:
- aminoglycosides e.g. gentamicin
- chloramphenicol
- erythromycin
- tetracycline
- tobramycin
- vancomycin
- Vibramycin (doxycycline)
chemotherapy and antiviral drugs:
- bleomycin
- interferon
- pegylated interferon-alpha-2b
- cisplatin
- mechlorethamine
- methotrexate
- vincristine
loop diuretics:
- bumetanide
- ethacrynic acid
- furosemide
others:
- chloroquine
- quinine
- anti-depressants
- Champix
Some Psychedelic drugs can produce temporary
tinnitus-like symptoms as a side effect.
- 5-MeO-DET
- Diisopropyltryptamine (DiPT)
- Benzodiazepine withdrawal
